Be a Part of the Theatre Experience!
AACT is a fun after school program with a purpose. Our children’s musical theatre program encourages each youth to become the best person they can be.
African American Children’s Theatre classes provide opportunities for young people to explore their gifts and talents, gain confidence in speaking before a group, learn performance skills, receive vocal training, and much more. They learn about the mechanics of theater such as sets, props, lighting and sound. And they are given the opportunity to learn the craft of theatre from local professional artists. Best of all, each of our plays is performed by all our students.

Current programs:
Academy of Theatre Training and Leadership Program:
Introduces young children from ages 8-14 years to the joy of theatre training and learning performance skills. After school program held two days per week, Tuesday and Wednesday from 4-6 pm at Milwaukee Youth Arts Center in Milwaukee, with public performances scheduled periodically.
Milwaukee Public Schools and Arts@Large, Artist in Residency:
Through improvisational acting, instructs children 5-10 years of age in important communication skills by encouraging their creative and imaginative powers to better understand how others think, feel and live. One period of classroom instruction, once a week at five Milwaukee Public Schools, 20-22 students each.
Behind the Curtain:
New innovative program and extension to AACT, developed for children ages 8-14 to introduce them to the technical side of a good production. The children, along with their parents, attend professional local theatre companies' productions and are taken on a special Behind the Curtain tour. These specially designed tours will give them an introduction to the technical aspects of producing a theatrical performance. They will observe the lighting, set, scenery building, and costuming crew, the actors, and meet with the Stage Manager who will describe all the other behind-the-scenes jobs under his control. The purpose is to give children and their parents exposure to the numerous occupations and entrepreneurial ideas available to them, not just on the stage, but Behind the Curtain.
